Great Horned Owl

From my nature journal: “As I hiked up the canyon, I flushed a large bird of prey at close range. It seemed to land on the ground. I finally spotted it sitting on a rock – but it didn’t look like a bird. I had no binoculars, so I was guessing – maybe it was something else? -- a bobcat, no, a deer--but it had ears! It was really white at the feet and seemed too big for a bird. Had it caught a rabbit? I kept approaching - then it flew. Sure enough – Great Horned Owl, only ½ mile from houses.”
